Levitt Center Senior Scientist Dr. Doug White and his team collaborated with emergency departments in California on research regarding the implementation of HIV prevention programs in the emergency department. The paper appearing in Volume 95 of the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, “Implementing HIV prevention in the emergency department: Strategies and outcomes from seven California emergency departments” was funded in part by our Gilead FOCUS grant. The research concluded that ED HIV screening programs can be leveraged to implement HIV Prevention Services (HPS). Different models for identifying and referring eligible patients to HPS allow for flexible integration. Each model has strengths and weaknesses for addressing the prevention care cascade and for informing practice.
